Project Brief

This project if a Public Private Partnership Project between WASH Institute, HCL Foundation and Madurai Corporation. The primary objective of the project is to make the city clean and open defecation free. The sub objectives are to create awareness to target communities to create demand for toilet construction, facilitating the families to construct toilets, post-construction support to ensure sustainable use and proper maintenance of toilets, providing hardware facilities in selected schools of Madurai city corporation and software activities in the school.

Apart from this WASH Institute with the support of HCL-TSS volunteers will launch a clean-up drive in the city, wherein the volunteers will involve in cleaning up activities to make ' Masilla Madurai' and for adoption of selected wards in the city .

Construction of Individual Household toilets will be the major focus of the project, to provide access to sanitation to all the left out families in the Madurai city

Achievements

The Phase-1 of the project was implemented during August-Dec, 2016. During the period 50 target beneficiaries were supported for construction of individual toilets in Ward 2, 2, 32 and 46. A fund support of Rs8000/toilet was given by the corporation and Rs5000/toilet was mobilized as community contribution and balance amount is supported by HCL Foundation.

Modular toilets based on Ferro-cement technology, wherein the entire super structure viz.,walls, doors and roof are in ready to fix condition were constructed. Both round type and rectangular shaped modular toilets were constructed. The advantage of this modular toilet units are they are cost effective and can been installed in six hours' time, while conventional toilets need 48 hours to complete. The pre-fabricated super structures are manufactured at our own production center at Reddiarchattiram.

The Phase 1 of the project had been completed, and the toilets were handed over to the community and Phase 2 of the project is in progress. The project will continue till March, 2018.
